According to Label Shimbun, "Environmentally friendly pressure-sensitive labels" to account for 37% of total label shipments in 2025.

This paper recently calculated the 2024 share of eco-friendly adhesive labels in Japan and globally. While eco-friendly labels accounted for 45% of total shipments worldwide, they only made up 37% in Japan, revealing that the adoption of eco-friendly labels in the Japanese market lags behind the global trend.

Labels using "forest-certified paper," which held the top share in both breakdowns, showed Japan lagging 4 points behind the global figure. Additionally, for "other eco-friendly products" that incorporate recycled and biomass resins in label substrates, adhesives, and inks, Japan was 3 points lower. Amid the accelerating global efforts to reduce environmental impact, as exemplified by the SDGs, the Japanese label market needs to proactively promote eco-friendly products.
